Accelerating Packaging Inks Innovation with the COATINO® digital SML-Calculator

Find out which Coating Additives product is a perfect match for your food packaging ink formulation. Make a quick check on the worst-case specific migration limit in the SML-calculator.

Speed of innovation is the key to success for modern printing inks for food packaging. In the lab people use modern tools like design of experiments or high throughput experimenting to speed up the development of advanced printing inks solutions. Being able to do a quick assessment on potential substances, which may cause failure in final migration test, would be beneficial for the developer to make the right selection on products and to reduce the risk of failure in final migration test. The COATINO® SML-CALCULATOR supports formulators in finding the best Coating Additives products for their food packaging ink formulation without the usual administrative hurdles to obtain compositional data. A Non-disclosure agreement (NDA) is not required to use the SML-CALCULATOR.

To address the needs of packaging ink formulations COATINO® SML-CALCULATOR provides the following features and functions.

Enlarge your toolbox for printing inks

The SML-CALCULATOR provides base data from a wide portfolio of products recommended for packaging ink formulations. In the context of a real packaging ink formulation with a quick additives assessment, additives can be compared and the best solution can be discovered with regard to a low migration risk in a final formulation.

Simple and instant calculation

Products recommended for packaging inks can easily be selected for calculation. The calculation result is instantly available. Quick modification of the calculation parameter is possible. Critical compositional data needed for calculation is deposited inside the calculator. A disclosure to the user is not necessary. Administrative hurdles, such as a Non-Disclosure Agreement (NDA) to use the SML-CALCULATOR is unnecessary.

As a result, the SML-CALCULATOR will show if the formulation will PASS the calculation, meaning that no substance in the formulation will exceed the SML-limit at an estimated migration of 100 % (worst case). In case one or more substances exceed the limits the calculation result will be CAUTION. This means that potentially one or more substances could exceed the migration limit in a migration test.

Calculation of full formulation by Swiss Ordinance Rules

The enrichment of the calculation with additional substances allows the calculation of a complete packaging ink formulation. The algorithm in the SML-CALCULATOR applies the rules of Swiss Ordinance SR 817.023.21, Annex 10 – “Materials and articles intended to come into contact with foodstuffs. A list of permitted substances for the production of packaging inks, and related requirements on the calculation”. Rules such as addition of substances and group substances are covered.

The data required for calculation are:
  • Selection of components (products or substances from the data base)
  • Ink layer (g/m²)
  • Contact area to food (Default: 0.06 m²/ 1 kg food)
  • Migration (Default: 100 % - total migration)

Swiss Ordinance substance search

The Swiss Ordinance substance search allows a quick and easy browsing of the content of Annex 10. Search parameters can be the CAS-number, the PM-Ref. number, or the substance name.

Keeping the pace with product compliance in an increasingly complex regulatory environment is a challenge. After the implementation of various digital regulatory services, e. g. the product search by regulations, the COATINO® SML-CALCULATOR lifts the regulatory services for packaging inks to the next level. It eases your journey through the regulatory universe. Find the perfect product for your packaging inks formulation with the COATINO® SML-CALCULATOR.
