House of Sustainability Sustainable solutions for decorative coatings

The demand for sustainable solutions in decorative coating applications is constantly increasing. We highlight solutions from the Evonik Coating Additives portfolio to increase the sustainability of your formulation.

We see regulatory compliance of our products as foundation for a successful formulation of a coating – avoiding critical labelling profiles helps to make products safe in use.

There are also a lot of service offerings like Regulatory Data Sheets available on our homepage as well as our regulatory expert groups in all regions.

We defined four pillars as the core of our sustainability activities:

Modern, 100% active defoamers with perfectly balanced efficiency / compatibility profiles - TEGO® Foamex 811, 812 & 852 for water based coatings

Water-based formulations can be very challenging regarding a high need for efficient foam elimination combined with a high need for system compatibility. This is for example often true for wood coating formulations for spray application as well as trim paints. Having safe use in mind, 100% active defoamers - which do not need addition of biocides in form of delivery - have gained a lot of interest – for example for use in high pH value formulations. Evonik Coating Additives offers a family of modern defoamers with a unique balance of defoaming efficiency & compatibility – members of that family are TEGO® Foamex 811 / 812 / 852 / 27.

Enabling future-proof formulations without biocides

Biocides are raw materials which are commonly used to protect a material (like liquids or coating films) against biological infestation and growth. Since 2012, the EU-regulation Nr. 528/2012 regulates the manufacturing, identification, and use of biocide products to ensure the protection of humans, animals, and our environment. Countries around the world do the same.

More and more strict regulations are in preparation or already set in place. In addition to this, customers request safer and more sustainable products that minimize the usage of biocides. To ensure future-proof formulations, Evonik Coating Additives supports paints and coatings manufacturers in their strive for safer and more sustainable solutions. We offer a broad range of products that do not contain methylisothiazolinone (MIT), benzisothiazolinone (BIT), bronopol, and other classified materials.

We already offer a wide range of products not containing biocides for various functionalities – for example TEGO® Humectant 7005, TEGO® Foamex 18, TEGO® Dispers 1010 and TEGO® Dispers 652 – an overview about these products is also available.

Alternatives to fluorosurfactants

Today, coating producers are interested to replace fluorosurfactants which have been used in waterborne formulations for various properties such as improving substrate wetting and leveling, providing an anti-crater effect as well as oily stain removal and anti-blocking.

With sustainable solutions in mind, we offer alternatives within the Evonik Coating Additives portfolio with a similar performance to fluorosurfactants in substrate-wetting, anti-crater properties and foam behavior. Typically, replacement solutions will be system-specific - products like TEGO® Twin 4100 offer very attractive performance profile although a general 1:1 direct replacement may not be possible.

TEGO® Twin 4100
  • low foaming
  • very good in substrate wetting and anti-crater effect
  • universal use, solvent-free

TEGO® Wet 270, 240 and Dynol™ 980 are performing on a very good level as well - depending on the formulation they will also fit as alternatives.
